I am particularly interested in the fact that they have open-sourced the client, because this leaves open the opportunity to build complex autonomous agents that hang out in Second Life. Since my research is about socially intelligent agents, this is a great opportunity to build agents that try to interact intelligently with thousands of people in SL. I worked with a group of students last semester trying to prototype some ideas, and had some promising results. So, I think I will continue to try to use SL as a research platform.
